Weekly Rumbles

25 May
May 25, 2012

Welcome to another edition of Weekly Rumbles.  With the change in season also means a change in produce available.  Personally I think this cold weather is perfect for escaping the cold and cooking up a storm.  With so many Farmers’ Markets around town I suggest heading to one and nabbing some great fresh locally farmed produce.

If cooking is not your scene, then I am sure you will find something fun and delicious out and about to do.  Whatever you end up doing have a fantastic and yummy week.

The Spice Islands & The Age of Discovery – Talk
Ian Burnet takes us on an exotic journey, tracing the lucrative spice trade that led explorers such as Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Magellan to dream of bypassing the Silk Road by sailing directly to the Spice Islands.

The clove tree is indigenous to only five small volcanic islands in Indonesia, namely Ternate, Tidore, Moti, Machian and Bacan. The nutmeg tree is indigenous to the equally small and even more remote islands of Banda, Lontar, Ai and Run, which lie 700 kilometres away in the Banda Sea. The exact location of these islands was long shrouded in myth and mystery, and together they became known as the Spice Islands.

The Global Food Security Challenge in the Coming Decades
The world faces a major challenge in the coming years. Meeting the food needs of roughly 9 billion people by 2050 will require significant productivity gains in agriculture, improvements to the livelihoods of the world’s poor, substantial reductions in post-harvest losses and food waste, all while attending to growing land and water scarcity and evolving abiotic and biotic stresses. Changes in demand and supply patterns will have significant market, humanitarian and environmental impacts. Today’s major agricultural producers and exporters, such as the United States and Australia, can and will play a significant role in meeting these challenges, both as surplus producers and as sources of innovation and investible capital. But because of the predominantly local and regional nature of food supply chains, gains must occur disproportionately in today’s low- and middle-income countries, mainly in Africa and Asia.  Come listen to Professor Chris Barrett discuss his research.  Free event.

White Onion Veloute with Crisp Confit Garlic & Prosciutto Crumb

09 May
May 9, 2012

I have never backed away from a challenge.  So when a mystery box arrived on my doorstep from Essential Cuisine, with the challenge to create a French dish using the mystery ingredients supplied as well as Essential Cuisine stock, how could I say no.  They were even kind enough to throw in a voucher so I could purchase any proteins I may need.

The brief was to choose a cuisine, either Spanish, French, Middle Eastern or Asian.  Then a selected mystery box was sent out for me to challenge myself with.  I chose French as when I think stock I automatically think classic French cooking.  The next step was to create a restaurant worthy entree or main. What’s on Sydney Foodie

03 May
May 3, 2012

Hi Guys

This is probably the biggest edition of ‘What’s on Sydney Foodie’ so far.  All growers’ markets happening around Sydney for the week are included for your weekend shopping pleasure.  There again is just so many food events happening around town.

A highlight as far as I am concerned is Josh vs El Loco.  Okay the event is actually called Taco Challenge at El Loco on Tuesday 8th.  JoshVsFood will be down there in full swing to see how many tacos he can consume and stake a claim on the El Loco wall of fame.  If you can, come on down and cheer him along!

Mothers’ Day is just over a week away.  What are your plans?  A casual BBQ at home, cooking dinner for mum, or are you heading out for Mothers’ Day lunch somewhere?  If you are undecided then check out my round up at the end of ‘What’s on Sydney Foodie’ for a glimpse of what is happening around town on Mothers’ Day, Sunday 13th May.
