This week’s episode, number eight, is about Food for Thought. The healthier alternatives on our supermarket shelves, gluten free, sugar free etc.
Firstly the two golden ticket winners that didn’t get their recipes on the shelves this week.
Elizabeth’s sugar free slice came about due to her daughter Poppy suffering from Kawasaki Disease. The whole family went sugar free. Nice looking slice, apparently really tasty. Sadly in the end the chocolate raspberry sugar free slice, though sugar free, was way too sweet as there was an overabundance of natural sugars in it. Elizabeth was sent packing after batch up.
Rebecca had a super food for baby, using quinoa, prepared fresh and snapped frozen in cute little shapes. Cute baby cubes, frozen in plastic shaped ice cube trays. There were a few hiccups in the preparation of these cubes in the batch up kitchen. We had a little drama of the baby food potentially not reaching health safety standards. In the end drama is resolved via a few phone calls and Rebecca makes it through to the final round.
Unfortunately, like the Highlander, in the end there can be only one. In this case it is Rosie who is the episode victor with her gluten free almond biscuits. I am sort of glad the baby food didn’t win. It meant I didn’t have to steal/borrow/hire a baby to taste test for me, the alternative was to eat it myself. Adult taste buds, therefore wouldn’t have been an accurate road test, I am pretty sure I would of hated it.

These biscuits looked so delicious on last night’s episode. I knew they would win from the start. Just look at these gorgeous fat Italian almond biscuits, topped with almonds and cherries, dusted in icing sugar. I just wanted to reach through the screen and gobble a few up.
The comments from the judges enforced my thoughts on these biscuits. Nobby “when it’s packaged you get all the different ones, all these little surprises”. Oh yes you would, as they are topped with almonds and cherries. Then Dazza pips in with “moist and not too sweet”. To me they looked like they would of been crunchy on the outside, and as you sunk your teeth in you would discover a dense moist almond centre.
Oh yes, they looked amazing. Taking the above into account, I ask you all, how the hell did we end up with these?
They remind me of macron halves that didn’t develop their feet properly.
Oh how Rose must be crestfallen. Those beautiful delicious looking biscuits of hers turned into flat boring meringues. What on earth happened Recipe to Riches?
I can’t show you products that are already out there or similar for this particular episode. It was almost like my local Woolworths knew I was coming. That whole section had been boxed off due to ‘lack of supply’ and they were sorry for inconvenience. I felt a conspiracy happening here. ‘Sara’s coming, box off all other competitive items’. Okay not really, but makes a good yarn.
Trying to not compare them with the gorgeous biscuits I saw last night, what did I think? They are dry, some had a small spot of moisture near the bottom. They don’t taste of almond, they taste of sugar. This makes sense as it is the first ingredient listed therefore the ingredient of the largest quantity in the biscuit. There are a couple of flaked almonds inside each meringue biscuits. They are basically hollow inside.
Rose, oh dear, my heart goes out to you for what they did to your recipe. Congratulations for winning Episode 8 and I wish you all the best with the rest of the competition.
I do hope that somebody somewhere saw your biscuits last night. That they heard your enthusiasm and ideas of a whole range. That they contact you and somehow make your range happen. A range true to your recipes.
Do tell dear Belly Rumbles’ reader, what did you think of the three recipes last night? Who do you think should of won? What did you think of Rosie’s Kitchen almond meringue biscuits?
