Scrumptiously easy cheesy mashed potatoes made in minutes. Creamy, fluffy comfort food at its best. What's not to love about cheesy potato mash.

Cheesy potato mash sprinkled with grated cheese in a white bowl.

This is an easy cheesy mashed potatoes recipe, a basic one to keep up your sleeve. It uses pantry staples, potatoes, cheese, milk and butter. I add a touch of garlic for an added depth of flavour.

The Perfect winter side dish to serve with saucy comfort dishes like quick and easy beef stroganoff, chicken chasseur (hunter's chicken), or delicious devilled sausages.

    • Potatoes: The best potatoes for mashing are floury starchy ones. Russets, Yukon Gold, Dutch Cream, Sebago, Red Royale or Coliban.
    • Butter: You can use salted or unsalted butter. Check seasoning before serving.
    • Garlic: The garlic is optional, but I love the extra little kick of taste it adds. Don't go overboard, just a small clove will do.
    • Milk: Full cream milk is best, bur use what you have on hand, low fat, half and half, etc is fine.
    • Cheese: There are two types of grated cheese used in this recipe, mozzarella and parmesan. You can use your cheese of choice. The best cheese for mashed potatoes is freshly grated as it will melt into the mash easier. Store bought grated works fine as well.
